$400 Million Investment in 5G Technology for Ontario and Quebec

Check out this article in the Ottawa Business Journal about the new $400 million private-public partnership to develop 5G technology.  Five multinational firms with offices in Ottawa are collaborating with the federal government, as well as the governments of the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.

Creating a 5G-driven economic corridor in Canada’s two most populated provinces will give existing businesses and new investors a competitive advantage when it comes to technology and communications.  The corridor will likely include Canada’s largest metropolitan area of Toronto, the country’s technology-driven national capital of Ottawa, and Quebec’s largest metropolitan area of Montreal.

According to the article, Ciena, Ericsson, Thales, IBM and CGI will spend $200 million over the next five years on research. The federal government and both provincial governments will match those funds with an investment of $67.7 million each into technology that can potentially offer connection speeds 100-times faster than current 4G technology.
