World’s Most Liveable Cities: Canada Scores High Again

Canada ties Australia with three of the top ten most liveable cities in the world, according to the 2018 global ranking by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The two countries accounted for 60 percent of the top ten, with Calgary, Alberta ranking fourth, Vancouver, British Columbia ranking sixth, and Toronto, Ontario ranking seventh. The top U.S. city was Honolulu, ranking 23rd out of 140 cities ranked by the EIU.

According to the EIU, the ranking quantifies the challenges that might be presented to an individual's lifestyle in 140 cities worldwide. Each city is assigned a score for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

Calgary, Alberta is a dynamic city of over one million people within view of the Rocky Mountains. One of the sunniest cities in Canada with 2,400 hours of sunshine annually, it is a great place for people who love outdoor recreation. Calgary has one of the best urban walking and cycling networks in the world, covering over 1,000 kilometres (620 miles).

Vancouver, British Columbia is the largest city in Canada’s west coast province, with a population of 620,000 people. The Greater Vancouver area is home to over 2.4 million people who enjoy the stunning natural beauty, multicultural influences and commitment to sustainability.

Often called the most beautiful and healthiest city in the world, Vancouver sits on the coast of the Pacific Ocean with a backdrop of the stunning coastal mountains.

Toronto, Ontario is Canada’s most populous city and the fourth most populous in North America with over 2.8 million people. The metropolitan Toronto area is home to over seven million people.  Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, Toronto is the financial, media and entertainment centre of Canada.

These are just three of the great cities in Canada, not to mention all of the amazing towns for people who like to escape the crowds...remember, Canada's population density is just over 4 people per square kilometer (6.5 people per square mile)! Whether you are looking for a funky urban lifestyle with arts and entertainment galore, or a relaxed existence on the banks of a secluded river, Canada has the place for you.
